Department Approval:
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
1Ianager Reviewed:
 , .i - j .
`
DATE: 12/ 11 /O 1
ITEM NO.: C-3
Agenda Section:
C'n f
Item Description: Award of Bid for Zimmerman Lake Drainage Improvements -- City Project 0 1• 18
Background: At the October 22, 2001 meeting, the Council approved the Zimmerman Lake Drainage
Improvement Project and authorized the advertisement for bids. This project includes installation of
appromately 216 feet of RCP pipe under Hwy 36 and the associated storm sewer structures to directly
connect the esting 72" storm sewer pipe, that outlets into the ditch on the south side of the Highway, to
Zimmerman Lake. This project will eliminate two regional drainage problems: One at the intersection
of Eldridge Avenue and Pascal Street, just to the east of HaxMar, the other is the flooding of the south
ditch where the 72" pipe outlets and occasionally floods the Department of Children, Families and
Learning building.
Bids were solicited from the end of October through November and were opened on Wednesday,
November 28, 200L In the case of the Zimmerman Lake Drainage Improvements Project, the lowest
bidder is Jay Bros., Inc. of Forest Lake, Minnesota.
Policy objectives: Based on past practice, the City Council has awarded the contract to the lowest
responsible bidder.
Financial implications: The engineer's estimate for the Zimmerman Lake Drainage Improvements
Project is $541,260.50. The total project cost is estimated to be $495,303.80 and will be funded by the
Storm Utility Fund, Wellington Management, Minnesota Department of Transportation and the
University of Minnesota.
RECOMMENDED COUNCIL ACTION:
Approval of a resolution awarding bid for Zimmerman Lake Drainage Improvements Project in the
amount of $495,303.80 to Jay Bros., Inc of Forest Lake, Minnesota.
Prepared by: Debra Bloom
