In Afghanistan, a woman risks the penalty of death if they are seen in public
with the "wrong man". This is just one of many laws enacted by the Taliban
which violate the human rights of Afgll women.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on December
1 Oth, 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. All member
nations were called to treat all humans with the rights and freedoms as set
forth in this declaration.
It is against Afghan law for a woman to leave her home unless she is
accompanied by her husband, father or son. Accompanied by any other man
may get her executed. Women are not permitted to speak to other men even
in greeting. They may not shake hands or smile "excessively". They may not wear white socks because
white is the color of the Taliban's flag. Women may not wear shoes with hard
soles because the click, click sound would distract men. Women's head to toe
covering is called a burqa. It is a huge piece of usually blue fabric. They are
forced to wear these because the Taliban says a womans face corrupts men!
In fact, women must paint the window glass so that no man can see into her
home.
Women may not work. Girls may not go to schooL In Article 26 it says
everybody has the right to education.
omen can not receive health care which is only for the men. Family
plax .<< ;.;,red and maternity care is almost non estent. There is an
epidemic of osteomalacia, a softening of the bones caused by poor diet. The
treatment requires large amounts of vitamin D enhanced by exposure to
sunshine but Afghan women never ever see the sun because they must be
