Date: 0129/0?
Item: WS II. B.
ROSEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
SPACE NEEDS
The International Association Chiefs of Police (IACP) does not set a minimum standard for
square footage in a police department. Each individual agency must examine their needs and
compare them to other business and government agencies. (See attachment).
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) also does not
mandate standards for the size of police department. CALEA standards do state that departments
comply with federal mandates involving juvenile/adult and male/female detention areas.
I. Four Unit Salley Port
• Four bays where squad cars can directly drive into the building while transporting
arrested parties. This helps to ensure the safety of personnel and the public from
arrested parties and does not allow suspects to have direct access to outdoor areas
(flight risk).
II. Detention Area directly accessible from Salley Port
. Main area for Intoylizer machine. Six holding cells divided into three pods of two
cells each. Federal law, along with CALEA standards, mandate that juveniles and the
different sexes be separated from sight and sound. Having detention pods allows
doors to be shut to avoid ming of prisoners.
• Two interview rooms in detention area. This allows officers to interview suspects in
private while still being contained inside the detention area.
IIL Roll Call Room, Report Writing Area and Property/Evidence Processing
. Roll ca11 room should be separate which will accommodate 5 to 1 I personnel
attending roll ca11s. This space would allow for technological advances in crime
mapping (up-to-the-minute information on various crimes).
• Six report writing stations with computer terminals. This area can be nearby but
separate from the roll call room. Officers completing reports should not be distracted
by the net crew's roll call.
• Evidence processing area should be adjacent to property room and salley port area.
This affords proper evidence handling and packaging prior to placement in the
property room. Property room needs an oversize door so safes/ATNI's and other large
pieces of evidence can be securely stored.
IV. Patrol Sergeant's Work Area
• Two Sergeants share a(lockable) area. Sergeants need a private location to speak
with subordinates and lock up personnel paperwork.
