Regular City Council Minutes — 09/30/02
DRAFT Minutes - Page 16
Kough offered a further friendly amendment that the
monuments be cut off at the base, giving staff discretion
for the best method to carry out reuse of the monuments.
Klausing spoke against the motion, citing the $10,000
expense to remove the poles, given the few complaints
received, and the Council's desire to retain a"Zero" levy
mcrease.
Councilmember Maschka concurred.
Councilmember Kough requested additional cost estimates
for removal, prior to making a decision.
Mayor Kysylyczyn suggested amending the motion to
include directing staff to remove the monuments in the
most cost-effective manner.
Councilmember Maschka attempted comment, without
recognition by Mayor Kysylyczyn.
Councilmember Klausing called for a point of
information, seeking the original cost for installation,
which was confirmed by staff at $22 , 000 each.
Mayor Kysylyczyn reiterated the need to look at the
greater scope of the issue; how did they get installed in
violation of city ordinance?
Councilmember Kough reiterated his desire to delay the
vote until additional removal costs were provided by staff.
Community Development Director We1SCi1 reminded
Councilmembers that if the cost was over $5,000, it would
automatically come back to the City Council for their
approval; stating that staff would consider salvage quotes
along with all other options.
Mayor Kysylyczyn stated that, with the addition of the
Public Works and Transportation Commission, the City
should be able to avoid future problems like this.
