Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Minutes October 12, 2010 <br />Page 3 of 4 <br />Carolyn Curti updated commissioners on the planning. The speakers have been confirmed and <br />invitations have been sent to the community. Commissioner Jaeger described the changes to the <br />brochure that will be distributed at the event. So far, nine people have responded that they will <br />attend. Commissioner McKenzie reminded members that most responses come in the last day, <br />but she encouraged everyone to go back to their friends and encourage them to attend. <br />4c. Update on Youth Representative <br />Commissioners Grefenberg said he would like a framework on how to engage Roseville youth. <br />He asked whether the Commission should be seeking a second youth before having a plan in <br />place for their involvement. Commissioners asked Curti where she sent information about the <br />previous opening. Curti said she sent it to the three schools within Roseville, the teachers and <br />principals who had provided names and the 623 Superintendent's office. Commissioners wanted <br />reassurance that all groups are invited to apply. <br />Chair Singleton clarified that no group was excluded when notifying youths about volunteer <br />opportunities. Commissioner Jaeger said all commissioners should be encouraging youths to get <br />involved, as she did with the young man who applied. <br />5. Public Comment <br />No one appeared to speak. <br />6. Future Agenda Items <br />Commissioner McKenzie mentioned projects that the State League of Human Rights <br />Commissions is working on. She talked about the Juvenile Justice program in the works for <br />Ramsey County for youths involved in the juvenile justice system. Commissioner McKenzie said <br />the HRC will monitor and may get involved. <br />Commissioner McKenzie also mentioned that the State League has been working in the Mille <br />Lacs Band of Ojibwa area where there has been some problems and misunderstandings. <br />Commissioner McKenzie brought a book called 2048: Humanity's Agreement to Live Together, <br />by J. Kirk Boyd. It outlines what needs to be done to achieve universal human rights 100 years <br />after the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. <br />Commissioner Grefenberg said he wanted a discussion on engaging youth in human rights <br />activities. He offered to draft a plan to take to the Visions of Success subcommittee. <br />7. Announcements <br />Curti said the City Council would make a decision on the youth appointment at the upcoming <br />Council meeting so the youth can come on board for the November meeting. <br />
