tWould You Do If A Friend Said A R. -acs t Statement About Another Friend?
B Ken Bo nneville
I think people fear what they don't understand, and people don't understand
racism. What I would do is talk to everyone. For some it might }yelp talking to them, but
others will go into a state of denial and won't lister. If they don't understand what. they're
talking about, talking to them could stop the problem. If they do understand, it probabl
won't stop the problem, but hopefully it will stop the remarks.
I would first go up to the friend who said the racist rep ark and. ask him, "'why did
you say it. If he said fie was just kidding, I mould say that lie shouldn't make 'kes like
that. If he asked why I would say, because they aren't funny and they're mean. If he said
he made the statement becaLxs E.t WaS 0 de, I WOUld say that l don't want to hear hire talk
like that anymore.
would' then ao to the fx the rep ark was said abOL)t and tell hire about it
because he has the right t know, l would also ask h'ni if lie is O.K., and if he said he
wasn't I would spend titre with hi»i to make sure lie was O.K. b y doing stuff with him like
basketball and video uarnes.
After that, I would talk to the parents of the friend who Trade the racist re a.rk,
and tell them what happened, and hopefully they would do s wi thing a.bOUt it. Bruce.
racism is learned, and YOU don't JU t think it up, the parents nil ht be the ones he learned it
from, Them 1.f the parents were the probl ni l would Minn diately go to niy parents and tell
them. Then if the parents weren't the problem the last thing 1 would tell my parents, and
ask ifthere is anything I COUld do, if my par ens thoUgllt of'an thing that I haven't dome
yet that I could, IWOUld do It.
