been hit by a car coming down there when the bus stops and those
kids get out. If that lane was spread out so they wouldn't have
to be out in the street - even in the winter when it's plowed
they don't plow that far and those kids are on the blacktop.

MAYOR DEMOS: I feel if this is accepted it should be
accepted hinging on the bicycle lanes - at least from C-2 north
if not the entire route.

COUNCILMAN HESS: I would like to see a bicycle path all the
way up and I think that would slow down the traffic.

MAYOR DEMOS: That's definitely slowed them on Hamline
Avenue.

COUNCILMAN GRAUEL: You're talking about a bicycle lane on
both the east and west?

MAYOR DEMOS: Just like on Hemline. They have it on one
side.

COUNCILMAN GRAUEL: Are you talking about bicycle paths on
both sides? That doesn't allow for parking.

MA YOR DEMOS: But I doubt tha t the y pa rk on there now. 'A1e
have closed the hearing, but I will answer your question.

MR. ROBERT THOMPSON: Would it be possible to ask the peo-
ple in the room on Cleveland if they are for it. I don't know
if that would affect you.

MAYOR DEMOS: I will speak for myself. I think there would
be an advantage to have that road paved with paths along the
side for safety factors alone and I don't think you'd have the
two lanes in each direction of traffic. I don't think that at
all. Hamline was widened and paved and believe me, the traffic
has not increased in speed. If anything, it has lowered.

COUNCILMAN ANDERSON: I'll answer the question. I'm looking
out in the audience and I know of some people personally that
voted for me in the last election, but I look out here and I
count heads and I get short. I get about 55 or 60 people out
here. In the campaign last fall there were what - three thousand

l7
