Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes May 11, 2010 Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Commissioners Gary Grefenberg, Liz Jaeger, Thelma McKenzie and Barb Yates. 1. Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. The Clerk called the roll. 2. Approve Minutes of April 13, 2010 Commissioner Gary Grefenberg moved approval of the minutes with a technical correction on line 147, adding the word "he" before the word "helped." Commissioner Liz Jaeger seconded the motion. Motion prevailed unanimously. 3. Staff /Committee Reports 3a. Visions of Success Subcommittee Commissioner Jaeger reviewed plans for the Regional Human Rights Commission meeting on May 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Roseville Skating Center. She said the focus of the meeting will be on state and local government efforts to enforce the MN Human Rights Act and promote human rights through education, outreach and engagement. Speakers include Beth Bibus, Enforcement Officer at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR), Kristi Rudelius- Palmer, Co- Director of the U of M Human Rights Center and Commissioner Jaeger. Mario Hernandez will moderate. Area Human Rights Commissions have been invited to share successes. The Subcommittee is concerned because few people have registered yet. The Commission discussed ways to get the word out and get more people registered. The Commission asked Staff Liaison Carolyn Curti to invite staff of the Center for Victims of Torture and members of the Karen community. All Commissioners were encouraged to help spread the word. 3b. Program Planners Subcommittee Commissioner Grefenberg reviewed the report, saying they are focusing on developing a work plan to develop a civic engagement framework. The subcommittee believes it will take a year to develop the two strategies 1) to assess city /community participation efforts and 2) to consider neighborhood groups forums and other forms of citizen involvement. Commissioner Grefenberg discussed ways to involve more people in the planning process, including inviting representatives from the other commissions and civic organizations, such as the League of Women Voters. Commissioners discussed other resources including local churches, rotary, Isaiah Group.
