Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />April 14, 2009 <br /> <br />Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called the Human Rights Commission <br />(HRC) meeting to order at approximately 7:05 p.m. <br /> <br />Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Vice Chair Marie Oftelie; Commissioner <br />Thelma McKenzie; and newly-a ppointed Commissioners Gary <br />Grefenberg, Liz Jaeger, Peg Kennedy and. Barbara Yates. <br /> <br />Others Present: City Manager Bill Malinen; Recording Secretary Sheila Stowell <br /> <br />Swearing in and Welcoming of New Commissioners/Oath of Office <br />City Manager Malinen administer ed the Oath of Office to Co mmissioners Liz Jaeger, Barbara <br />Yates, Peg Kennedy and Gary Grefenberg. <br /> <br />City Manager Malinen provided comments and mate rials related to advisory commission service <br />and process and a commissioner handbook with financial disclosure and Ethics <br />acknowledgement notes and materials. <br /> <br />Approve Minutes of March 10, 2009 <br /> <br />Motion - Member Oftelie moved, seconded by Memb er Jaeger to approve the meeting minutes <br />of March 10, 2009 as presented. Motion car ried: 3/0/4 (Jaeger; Yates, Kennedy and <br />Grefenberg). <br /> <br />Discussion with United Way Representati ves about conducting another Cultural <br />Complementarity Forum <br />Loudi Rivamonte from the United Way and part of the planning group for the first dialogue, <br />discussed whether another forum should be sche duled. Rivamonte said Culture Dynamics was <br />being fazed out of United Way programs; howev er, she assured Commissioners that she and <br />Victoria Amaris would pursue diversity forums as independent consultants. <br /> <br />Rivamonte provided handouts relate d to program opportunities, and she and the HRC reviewed a <br />summary of the 2008 Dialogue and ways to improve the next forum. Ms. Rivamonte said the <br />2008 Forum had a great turnout and divers ity, and speakers we re well-received. <br /> <br />Discussion included the next foru m having more presenters from Roseville, not just those <br />working in Roseville; including a world map for atte ndees to indicate the lo cation of their origin; <br />round tables for registration and discussion gr oups; and a discussion about the next steps <br />resulting from the village concept dialogues a nd potential partnering in the second forum. <br /> <br />Further discussion included perceptions of huma n rights for people of co lor with an African <br />American President and the need to broaden th e forum with issues beyond color; stereotypes
