Roseville Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes – May 12, 2009 Page 4 of 4 Member Kennedy noted the limits and complexity of her schedule until after July 1, 2009. City Manager Malinen noted that Roseville H RC essay contest winner, Megan Brady, Parkview Center School, was awarded second in the Stat e Human Rights essay competition and would be recognized on May 16. Discussion included the State Leag ue of Human Rights and other m eetings on a state-wide level for participation by members; potential schola rships for attendance pr ovided by the Bremer Foundation for commissioners; and information and resources available to the HRC compiled at City Hall specific to human rights issues. Announcements City Manager Malinen noted that he and/or Caro lyn Curti would attend future HRC meetings to provide staff support; and advise d that staff had submitted the Bremer Grant application. Member Kennedy invited members, as an example of the diversity of Roseville, to a “Taste of Roseville,” potluck picnic feat uring cultural foods on May 27, 2009 at the Dale Street West Shelter at Central Park from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m . and sponsored by English Language Learners (ELL) and open to the public. Ms. Kennedy sugge sted that this was something the HRC could support as citizens without formal sponsorship. City Manager Malinen encouraged members to aler t staff to such events that would allow Mayor Klausing to recognize and announce the events at upcoming City Council meetings. Member Kennedy said she late because she wa s attending a new orga nization of the Karin Community of MN for Burmese refugees. Ms. Kennedy noted that this was a significant group within Roseville; and that they were prepar ing a Request for Proposals for social services specific to this group. Ms. Kennedy asked HRC members to consider potential HRC actions, such as letters welcoming this culture to the community. Adjournment Chair Singleton adjourned the mee ting at approximately 7:55 p.m.
