'
Published by the Arden Association
No. 121 October 1978
Election time is still here, and all of us
should specially thank the people who volunteered
their time to help address the post cards that
'
O
Were sent out before the primary to every regis-
tered voter in Arden Hills. To satisfy legal
requirements, these post cards had to be addres-
to each individual voter exactly as he or
'shesed
C;
was registered, and each person at the same
address required a separate card. Because AH
R'
has now gone to 5 precincts rather than 39 these
3800 post cards were needed to tell everyone
where they should vote.
The volunteers, who addressed these cards
Z.
by hand, were Mary Gillies, Vicky LeMire, Nancy
'
Hansen, Charlotte Swank, Darlene Anderson and
Donna McCune. This was really a monstrous job
• • •
and we all do appreciate the effort.
,,
• -
e
Of these 3800 cards, approximately 300
could not be delivered because people had moved.
' The ones that were returned to the Village Hall
through the mails had to be paid for with another 10¢ because, of course, post
cards are not first class mail. And we couldn't send them first class in the
first place because we didn't want any of them forwarded. The biggest bunch
' of incorrect addresses was naturally at Bethel College where the student resi-
dents change each year. Arden Hills had problems with this entire project.
In the general election on November 79 we will have an opportunity to vote
for several City offices. The terms of the Mayor and of two of our four Coun-
cilmen expire at the end of the year. If you're interested in any of these
jobs, you can file at the Village Hall up until October 10 for only a $2.00
filing fee. The Mayor's job pays $175/month and the Councilmen receive $125/mo.
This is approximately slave wages, but there you are.
The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a City Candidates meeting at the
Village Hall on November.2 at 7s3O p.m. At this time all the Council and
Mayoral candidates will get a chance to speak.
'Our City Tree Inspector Dave Winkel will present an exhibition and dis-
cussion of diseased trees on October 24 at -8s00 p.mo at the Village Hall. He
will tell a bit about the history of the problem, suggestions for prevention,
what to do with a diseased tree, and how to handle firewood. If we're lucky,
he may bring a real elm beetle. For sure, there will be bark samples, elm logs
and oak wilt exhibits. Shoreview has tried a similar session and it was quite
successful. Dave will also have a pin map of Arden Hills to show us where
' our bLggoot problems lie.
iA proposed new aign`ordinance for Arden Hills has been perking along over
the.summer and is getting close to a final presentation to the Planning Commis-
sion* The sub -committee has had four meetings so far, trying to set up some
