.
"

'~

Administration Department/Communications

Memo

To: Neal Beets, City Manager Cv7
From: Carolyn Curti, Communications specialiS~\
I
Date: February 25,2002 I
Re: Redistricting

Joe Mansky, Ramsey County Elections, will attend the March 4 City Council Work Session.
He'll review the redistricting timeline and be available to answer questions from the Council.

The Legislature must approve redistricting plans by March 19. If they do not complete the
task, the State Judiciary will draw the legislative lines, and the City will work off those plans
to redraw precinct lines.

The City must complete and the City Council approve the new precinct lines by April 30. In
redrawing the lines, the City will work with the following assumptions:

· Ten precincts with approximately 2,300 registered voters in each precinct.

· Try to closely adhere to existing precinct lines, where possible.

· Follow mandated divisions (census block, along recognizable physical
features, highways, rivers, railroads).

· Lines correspond with legislative and congressional districts.

· Select polling places that meet ADA standards, have adequate parking, and
that are centrally located to precinct.

I anticipate bringing the proposed precinct plans to the April 8 City Council meeting.

For your information, a list of responsibilities and timeline is attached.

\CarolynC\redistricting\03-04 memo to council.doc

.
