Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes April 20, 2016 Commissioners: Chair Wayne Groff, Lisa Carey, Arlene Christiansen, Nicole Dailey, Edward Johnson, Lauren Peterson and Molli Slade Youth Commissioners: Gabriel Cederberg Commissioners Absent: None Staff Present: Carolyn Curti Call to Order The Human Rights Commission (HRC) meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. Chair Groff requested roll call. Swearing in New Commissioners Chair Groff swore in new Human Rights Commissioners Edward Johnson, Lauren Peterson, and Nicole Dailey. Approve Agenda Commissioner Slade suggested moving the presentation for Item 7.d Second Chance Coalition before the Approval of the Minutes. Commissioner Slade moved and Commissioner Christiansen seconded a motion to approve the agenda as amended. Motion passed unanimously. New Business d.) Second Chance Coalition Ms. Natasha Lapcinski, Second Chance Coalition, reviewed the history of the Coalition and the Day on the Hill Event. She explained Second Chance advocates for fair and responsible laws that allow those who have committed crimes to redeem themselves and drug sentencing reform. They are supporting other organizations to provide guidelines and training for School Resource Officers (SRO). Human Rights is tied closely to what the Coalition stands for and works to improve including the right to vote for those who have committed a crime and served their sentence. Commissioner Slade asked what Ms. Lapcinski would recommend as a way to get the word out about the Coalition and what they are working on. Ms. Lapcinski stated community conversations and dialogues helps to educate the community and encourages people to contact their legislatures. She would recommend having Jason Sole speak at a community event.
