Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />April 20, 2016 – Minutes <br />Page 2 of 6 <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated the Commission would discuss their planning for the remaining year and <br />get in touch with the Coalition on any projects they may be able to partner in. <br /> <br />Ms. Lapcinski stated the Second Prison Project would be hosting a 5K walk/run in <br />Minneapolis to bring awareness to the community. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey asked what the proceeds from the 5K walk/run would be used for. <br /> <br />Ms. Lapcinski stated Second Prison Project is not expecting to make money during the <br />event. They are doing this in partnership with Active.com to build awareness. <br /> <br />Approve Minutes of February and March Meetings <br /> <br />Youth Commissioner Cederberg stated for the February minutes in line 420 and the March <br />minutes in line 116 change “the last name for Marcus to “Lowry”. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey moved and Commissioner Christiansen seconded a motion to <br />approve the February 24, 2016 meeting minutes and the March 16, 2016 meeting <br />minutes as amended. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />Public Comment on Items Not on Agenda <br /> <br />There being no one wishing to address the Commission of items not on the agenda, Chair <br />Groff moved to the next agenda item. <br /> <br />Old Business <br /> <br />a.Essay Contest <br /> <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen thanked Ms. Curti for identifying the top 12 scores. She <br />recommending keeping the Excel spreadsheet created by Commissioner Carey for scoring <br />the essays for future use. She asked if the Commission should use the top three scores for <br />first, second, and third place. <br /> <br />Chair Groff agreed this would be how the Commission would identify the first three places. <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen suggested identifying two Honorable Mentions so there would be <br />five readers for the ceremony. <br /> <br />Chair Groff stated only the top three would read their essays due to time constraints with <br />the City Council schedule. There would be refreshments prior to the City Council meeting for <br />the winners and their families. Once the City Council confirms a date the Commission will be <br />notified. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carey suggested providing two honorable mention awards at $15 each and <br />announcing their names at the ceremony. These winners would not read their essays at the <br />Council meeting. <br /> <br />Commissioner Christiansen clarified essay #29 would be first place, second place was essay <br />#85, third place was essay #41 and the two honorable mentions would go to essay #31 and <br />#79. <br /> <br /> <br />
