Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />May 11, 2010 <br />Commissioners Present: Chair David Singleton; Commissioners Gary Grefenberg, Liz <br />Jaeger, Thelma McKenzie and Barb Yates. <br />1. Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. The Clerk <br />called the roll. <br />2. Approve Minutes of April 13, 2010 <br />Commissioner Gary Grefenberg moved approval of the minutes with a technical correction on <br />line 147, adding the word "he" before the word "helped." Commissioner Liz Jaeger seconded <br />the motion. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />3. Staff /Committee Reports <br />3a. Visions of Success Subcommittee <br />Commissioner Jaeger reviewed plans for the Regional Human Rights Commission meeting on <br />May 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Roseville Skating Center. She said the focus of the meeting will be <br />on state and local government efforts to enforce the MN Human Rights Act and promote human <br />rights through education, outreach and engagement. Speakers include Beth Bibus, Enforcement <br />Officer at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR), Kristi Rudelius- Palmer, Co- <br />Director of the U of M Human Rights Center and Commissioner Jaeger. Mario Hernandez will <br />moderate. <br />Area Human Rights Commissions have been invited to share successes. The Subcommittee is <br />concerned because few people have registered yet. The Commission discussed ways to get the <br />word out and get more people registered. The Commission asked Staff Liaison Carolyn Curti to <br />invite staff of the Center for Victims of Torture and members of the Karen community. All <br />Commissioners were encouraged to help spread the word. <br />3b. Program Planners Subcommittee <br />Commissioner Grefenberg reviewed the report, saying they are focusing on developing a work <br />plan to develop a civic engagement framework. The subcommittee believes it will take a year to <br />develop the two strategies 1) to assess city /community participation efforts and 2) to consider <br />neighborhood groups forums and other forms of citizen involvement. Commissioner Grefenberg <br />discussed ways to involve more people in the planning process, including inviting <br />representatives from the other commissions and civic organizations, such as the League of <br />Women Voters. <br />Commissioners discussed other resources including local churches, rotary, Isaiah Group. <br />
