ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL—MAY 29, 2012 8
Mr. Trainer stated the classrooms near the Phase II construction site would not be used as
classrooms, but would be used as a construction office. The two classrooms relocated to the north
parking lot would remain in use. He explained the temporary classrooms were high quality and
offered the students the most up to date technology. He did not object to the addition of
Condition#8.
AMENDMENT: Councilmember Holden moved and Mayor Grant seconded a motion to
add Condition#8 stating: The two temporary classrooms located on
the Phase II site will be removed from the campus prior to the issuance
of a building permit for Phase IL
Councilmember Werner questioned the age of the temporary classroom buildings.
City Planner Beekman stated the classrooms were placed on the campus in 2004.
AMENDMENT VOTE:
The motion carried (3-2) (Tamble and Werner opposed).
Mayor Grant asked if the proposed construction fit into the recent planning process that was
undertaken by Bethel University. He questioned if Bethel had any other large construction
projects planned for the near future.
Mr. Trainer stated the proposed construction was the foundation of this planning process. He
noted the recent quarterly trustee meeting approved of the proposed plan. He anticipated
reconstruction of residence halls along with maintenance of current buildings in the near future.
Councilmember Holden expressed concern with the building height. She encouraged Bethel
University to follow the City's requirements in the future.
The motion as amended carried unanimously (5-0).
C. Planning Case 12-008—Cub Foods PUD Amendment
City Planner Beekman stated SuperValu was requesting an amendment to the PUD that would
allow for a drive-up window for the pharmacy inside the building. The drive-up window would
be located on the south side of the building and would require minor modifications to the existing
parking lot. As part of the application, SuperValu was also requesting an amendment to the
signage plan for the building. The applicant is proposing to replace the current pharmacy sign on
the front of the building with one that would indicate the presence of the drive-up. The proposal
includes a request to add an additional sign over the drive-up window on the south side of the
building. Staff feels the additional signs were excessive and that adequate signage can be
accommodated within the sign allotment on the building.
City Planner Beekman reviewed the submitted site plan noting the planned revisions to the
exterior of the building and discussed the elevations depicting the sign adjustments being
requested. The Planning Commission reviewed Planning Case 12-008 on May 9, 2012, and
