Public safety expenses are a major factor in the City's budget. Public safety expenses have
increased every year and there is no end in sight for this trend. With both Police and Fire
services, the City is part of a larger group where the majority rules. The City may not support an
increase in staffing or a capital expenditure, but the City may also not be able to stop the
proposal. The majority vote is the final decision. In the case of the proposed 2013 Police
budget, I think that the additional deputy will be approved regardless of the City's position; but I
also think that the staffing additions can be limited to just the one additional full-time Deputy for
patrol.
The draft 2013 Police budget will again be discussed at the July meeting of the Contracted
Communities group and a decision will be made at either the July or August meeting.
City of Arden Hills
July 16, 2012 Work Session Meeting
