Without a doubt, one of the nicest places to visit in Arden Hills is the
public library, located at 1941 W. County Road E-2, at the junction with New
Brighton Road. On the snowy day that I dropped over, the place was doing a
brisk business, not only in books, but also in pictures and records. Branch
Librarian Phyllis Irwin estimates that approximately 300 people use the library
each day and that the circulation is roughly 225,000 items per year. She and
Assistant Jane Kingsbury are aided by 8 other employees in keeping the oper-
ation running smoothly.
In addition to the books, records, and pictures, the Arden Hills library"
has a collection of sculptures, any of which may be checked out for a 6 week
period. There is also a pattern exchange for home sewers to turn in old
patterns and take out new ones. These are not checked out like books but are
run on the honor system. The library also provides magazines, films, and pam-
phlets. The pamphlets alone have a circulation of nearly 1500 per month.
Several sets of encyclopediae which may be checked out for the regular two-
week book period are also available.
A reference librarian is always on duty to handle any reference problems
you might have. The Arden Hills library answers over 1600 questions each
month. Another service of this library is to take books to five nursing homes
each two weeks for the residents there to select reading material. Volunteers
are needed for this project, so if this interests you, give the library a ring
at 636-1790.
The hours the library is open are: 1Os00 a.m. - 5t30 p.m. on Mondays and
Fridays; 1:00 p.m. - 8!00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; 1Os00 a.m
to 5s00 p.m. on Saturday*; closed Sundays. 0
e
e
st
Went to a League of Women Voters' meeting one cold night last month and
was really impressed with the interest and intelligence of the members. Cur-
rently Arden Hills has a very small group and holds its meetings along with
the Shoreview League. One of the projects of the AH group is to drum up some
interest in local government; unfortunately the membership is too small to
adequately attend all of Arden Hills' committee meetings.
If this sort of concern with government is your thing, give the Arden Hills l
League of Women Voters a call. The president is Helen Schmidt at 633-3480.
You will be warmly welcomed. There are either day or evening meetings. ,
P.S. Would you believe that Helen came out to the last Newsletter Com-
mittee meeting one dark January morning at 6:45 a.m. at the Steak Inn? Now,
THAT'S interest!
For late winter/early spring entertainment, here are some of the local
events coming ups
At the Arden Hills library there is a morning program for adults at the
same time a story hour is held for 4 -.and 5 -year olds.
