Joynes, Sr., City Administrator

FROM: Sue Polka, Public Works Director/City Engineer

SUBJECT: Dump Truck Purchase

Budgeted Amount: Actual Amount: Funding Sources:
$240,000 $197,352.40 Equipment Replacement Fund

Requested Action

Authorize the purchase of a 2018 Mack chassis from Nuss Truck & Equipment ($87,808.40) and
Towmaster dump truck body, including plow and de-icing equipment ($109,544.00) for a total
cost of $197,352.40, which includes the trade in of the City’s 2001 Sterling dump truck in the
amount of $18,000.00.

Background

In 2011 the City purchased a used 2001 Sterling dump truck with plow and de-icing equipment
from Ramsey County. While the possibility of purchasing another used truck from the County
was considered. However, they currently do not have any trucks available and will not until
2019. In addition, many replacement parts for the Sterling chassis are no longer available due to
the line not being produced for several years which not only affects the City’s current truck but
also the next available Ramsey County truck. The County is currently replacing the old Sterling
trucks with Mack trucks and has the equipment to complete the repairs. The dump truck is used
for plowing in the winter and to haul materials for paving projects in the summer as well as for
hauling materials during utility repairs. If this truck were to become inoperable, the level of
service for snow removal would decline. The City’s 2001 dump truck currently has mileage of
47,630 with 3,870 hours of operation.

AGENDA ITEM – 1E

MEMORANDUM
