Contemporary lay ing hens lay between 300 and 350 eggs a <br />year and dev elop reproductive dis eas e whic h is the caus e of up to 90% of mortality in egg- <br />lay ing flocks beginning at the age of 2 years old. It is a protrac ted and horrible death. Google “male c hick s ”. 3. - <br />chic k ens are Tropic al Jungle Fowl and need s erious and c ostly protection in Minnesota’s <br />extreme hot and cold c limate. 4. In 2001 there were 26 chicken permits in Mpls. There are now <br />366. That’s an increase of 1308%. Our organization was founded in 2001. The fad has created <br />a nationwide epidemic of unwanted chickens, ducks, geese, quail, and other domesticated <br />fowl. They are abandoned at animal sanctuaries and shelters when t he novelty wears off. <br />Before 2009 our res cue averaged fewer t han 40 s urrender inquiries a y ear. Sinc e 2009 when we <br />firs t began keeping surrender statistics, we've been ask ed to help over 3,136 animals, <br />overwhelmingly birds, and in no way hav e we been able to help them all. We haven’t had time <br />to update the graph since 2015. There is no limit to the number of way s c hickens can cross <br />your path without ever leaving y our neighborhood. They might turn up at garage s ale, in a <br />dumpster, a f riend of a friend who got bored, a walk in the park , left s omewhere in a box , <br />tos s ed from a car, or left on the Interstate.
