Bac kyard Chic kens Survey
31 / 81
Cov id, animal cont rol agencies us ed to send offic ers to c atc h and impound s tray or abandoned
chic k ens but there are so many now, some s helters don’t ev en bother so impound shelter data
does not reflect the number of city birds impacted. In 2001 there were 26 c hic k en permits in
Mpls. There are now 366. That’s an increase of 1308%. Plus, the trend in t he number of
chic k ens allowed per permit has also inc reas ed. Permit compliance rates are about 3% so
there is no good data to repres ent t he ac tual 97% of households with chickens in most
communit ies . Bottom line is there is a world of birds who need help. 5. Casualties of Urban
Animal Agric ulture https ://www.facebook .com/media/set /?
vanity=475016785200&set=a.10150602336545201 6. Back y ard Chickens - Sustainable for
Whom? https://www.facebook.c om/media/set/?
vanity=475016785200&set=a.10152887500425201 7. Back y ard Chickens : The Bird's Eye
View- v ideo present ation was produced for city planning committees that reques ted Chicken
Run Res c ue’s recommendations about propos ed c hic k en ordinances. It is an ov erv iew of our
res c ue work and what can go wrong for the birds when cities allow backyard c hickens . Chicken
Run Res c ue https://vimeo.com/67854723
275 A coworker in a dif ferent twin cities s uburb had chickens, and it was a great family project for
the parents and k ids to work on together
10/12/2020 3:43 PM
276 The owner is very res pec tful of their neighbors and there aren’t any problems 10/12/2020 3:11 PM
277 I had a friend with a bac k yard c hicken coop who got fresh eggs every day.10/12/2020 11:16 AM
278 Our neighbors had t hem in New Brighton. They never bothered us .10/12/2020 9:43 AM
279 Its been many y ears now and was largely pos itive with t he ex cept ion of the frequent attac k s
by wildlife. Our neighbors had them too and I recall that the noise was a bit obnoxious! They
mak e noise at what should be quiet times of the day /night.
10/12/2020 9:17 AM
280 I have barely notic ed they were there. They aren’t aggres sive, eat tic k s and are fun pets. I
pers onally don’t want them, but I see nothing wrong with others having them. I think they can
be a great hobby and people should be allowed to pursue hobbies that have very litt le impac t
on others.
10/11/2020 10:25 PM
281 When I firs t moved to Arden Hills, our neighbor had chic kens and it was a pos itiv e experience
for me. I als o k now two other families in cities who have c hick ens --one lives in urban St . Louis
and their son has kept the chickens and made s ome $$ on the s ide by s elling eggs . Another
friend liv es in urban Cleveland and keeps chic k ens as well. Both f amilies have had excellent
experienc es .
10/10/2020 9:56 PM
282 There arent negativ es . Hens are for the most part quiet, if they free range t hey "k now" their
yard boundaries. They are great at certain types of insec t c ontrol. They are entertaining as well
as relaxing to watch. They dont smell. Their litter is great c ompos ted to feed your garden.
They giv e bac k to the community in t he form of neighborly relations. Becaus e ev eryone is
enthralled wit h a chicken.
10/9/2020 10:18 PM
283 Chickens are a great way to teach c hildren (and adults) about where their food c omes f rom and
prov ide them wit h hands on real life experienc e about caring for animals and farming on a
small s c ale. Knowing where you food comes from (and ev erything y our food ate) is an
inc redibly import ant thing. Hens are quiet and s houldn’t be cons idered a nuisanc e. It is
critically important t hat we are allowed the opportunity to chose to be green and liv e off of our
own food s ourc es in this c ommunity. It s eems ev ery one of our neighboring cities allows
keeping c hickens and we hav en’t adopted this polic y y et. It ’s time for Arden Hills to recons ider
this policy.
10/8/2020 3:36 PM
284 They had hens only and they were very quiet y ou wouldn’t know they were t here.10/8/2020 10:01 AM
285 Chickens eat unwanted pests like t ick s . Fresh eggs are healthy and delic ious.10/8/2020 9:46 AM
286 Hens are not noisy, and they eat nuis ance bugs like ticks and beetles. They are f riendly pets.
They help provide local food sources and food s tability which is something we need more of.
It's a great learning experienc e for kids as well and c hick ens c an be shown at the fair for 4H.
10/7/2020 6:51 PM
287 Friend in STP has lots of eggs and is part of a c ommunity. Chicken was te can be c ompos ted
for gardening.
10/7/2020 4:49 PM
288 Experience has all been very good. The only negativ e is the work for the c hicken owners t o
secure hens from raccoon predators . Hens eat left ov ers which also reduces food wast e.
10/7/2020 10:21 AM
