Decision
JIM Ltd.
Resources
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This study contains the results of a telephone survey of 403
randomly selected residents of the City of Arden Hills. Survey
responses were gathered by professional interviewers across the
community between September 18 , and October 4 , 1990 . The average
interview took twenty-one minutes. In general , random samples
such as this yield results projectable to the entire universe of
adult Arden Hills residents within + 5 . 0 percentage points in 95
out of 100 cases.
Arden Hills is a mature, upscale, stable, and well-educated
community. The median longevity of adult residents was 8 . 5
years . Thirteen percent of the sample reported moving to the
city during the past two years, while forty-six percent had been
there over a decade. Over one-half of the sample came from two
locations prior to moving to the community: twenty percent
reported moving from Saint Paul , while thirty-one percent moved
• from other Northern Ramsey County suburbs. A majority either had
no plans to move, or felt they would remain in Arden Hills for at
least ten years. Forty-five percent of the households contained
school-aged children; seventeen percent reported pre-schoolers.
Ninety-four percent owned their current residences, with eighty-
seven percent residing in single family homes.
The average age of respondents was 45 . 3 years old. Over half
of the sample fell into the 35-54 year age range. A very high
sixty-seven percent reported heads-of-households working in
either Professional-Technical or Owner-Manager jobs. Twenty-
three percent reported working in Arden Hills. Blue Collar
households were only seven percent, and retirees accounted for
fifteen percent. The median educational achievement was college
graduation; in fact, almost eighty percent of the sample had at
least some college experience. The median household yearly
income was $55 , 875 . 00, approximately $171000 higher than the
current Metropolitan Area suburban norm. In general , then, Arden
Hills must be classified as a maturing "gold collar" community.
Location, high quality schools, and available housing were
the major reasons offered for settling in the community; forty
percent mentioned the first reason, while nineteen percent cited
schools and twenty percent pointed to housing. Small town
ambience, peacefulness, strong neighborhoods, and parks were also
positive attributes. A very strong ninety-eight percent rated
• the quality of life as either "excellent" or "good; " the fifty-
four percent rating it as "excellent" is the strongest rating 1
within the Metropolitan Area. Residents are extremely satisfied
3128 Dean Court • Minneapolis, Minnesota 55416 0 (612) 920-0337
