Arden Hills Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting 2
February 26,2002
• Mr. Moore referenced a program presently in progress that provides families with the opportunity
to donate park benches along trails or in a specified park. He stated that if the Parks and
Recreation Committee likes this idea that he would like to propose that the group donate a park
bench from the Committee. He stated that he would write a formal proposal to Council, on
behalf of the Committee, outlining the concept and personalized plaque, to present to Council for
approval. He stated that the message would have to be approved by the PTRC and the City
Council.
Chair Straumann stated that he is a member of the Roseville Lutheran Church adding that they
recently donated a bench in Lexington Park. He stated that this program fits well for the money
spent. He suggested having the Eagle Scouts build the benches. He acknowledged that one of
the most difficult things to do is raise money and suggested that the Parks and Recreation
Committee endorse this program.
Committee Member Zilmer agreed adding that it would be great savings on the park budget.
Committee Member Hatch asked if they would include a statement that would prevent
commercial businesses from buying up the park bench space. Mr. Moore clarified that the intent
of this program is to donate and remember loved ones. He assured the Committee that
advertisements would not be allowed on the park benches.
Committee Member Thompson asked if the people donating would have the ability to choose the
• bench and the location. Mr. Moore confirmed that they would have that option stating that he
would work closely with the family or group to determine the exact park location. He stated that
the process would be similar to what was done with the tree program with the Friends of Ramsey
County. He stated that they had an actual ceremony and planted the trees with the family present.
Chair Straumann suggested utilizing the City website and email to let everyone know when
programs like this come up.
Committee Member Speggen asked for clarification on the control of what can be written on the
plaque. Mr. Moore clarified the approval process stating that the PTRC would be involved in the
process. He stated that when they have agreed to what should be written on the plaque it is then
forwarded to City Council for final approval.
MOTION: Committee Member Henry moved and Committee Member Speggen seconded the
motion to approve the PTRC endorsement and involvement with the Park Bench
Donation Program. The motion carried unanimously.
Mr. Moore reviewed the information and an article that he would like to use in the newsletter and
asked the Committee for feedback.
Committee Member Henry suggested reviewing the document for typos. Mr. Moore stated it
would be reviewed stating that this is a draft.
Chair Straumann asked if it would be included on the City website. Mr. Moore confirmed that it
would be included on the City website.
