Arden Hills Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes 9
June 11, 2002
Committee Member Henry expressed concerns stating that they are setting a potential precedent
for paying out of park funds. Committee Member Thompson agreed adding that there are other
ways to keep the Buckthorn program moving. The Committee agreed to discuss this issue at a
later date.
Chair Straumann asked if they were on track for ADA. Mr. Moore confirmed that they are.
Committee Member Henry asked for clarification of ADA. Mr. Moore stated that ADA would be
updating Perry Park and that it is a major step for the softball and baseball programs. He further
stated that by ordering ADA certified wood fiber, this would bring the playground structures up
to compliance with ADA standards. He stated that from a long-term standpoint all park structures
would have appropriate ramps and structures. He explained that the League of Minnesota
Insurance Trust came out and did a playground analysis and has made recommendations with
respect to swing sets and seatings that would need replacement. He further explained that the
City has purchased only from Miracle Recreation. He stated that Miracle is a locally based
company in Hastings, which makes it easy to get parts on short notice.
Chair Straumann suggested including replacement of play structures for long term
considerations.
Mr. Moore stated that he has two Operations and Maintenance employees who will be receiving
training in order to become certified playground equipment instructors.
F. Park Signage
Chair Straumann referenced the Park Renovation section that details trail signage and naming
stating that this can be a discussion item at their next work session.
Mr. Moore stated that it is City Staff s wish that Guidant Drive be renamed as Cummings Park
Drive. Council will have to approve this.
Committee Member Messerly clarified that there would be a parking area for Cummings Park.
Mr. Moore stated that there would be a parking area available noting that they would have 20-25
parking spots available in the Fair-Isaacs area.
Chair Straumann noted the trees. Mr. Moore stated that Friends of the Parks are supplementing
the trees. He explained that they are the third highest group to purchase trees adding that they
purchased 30-35 trees.
Committee Member Henry asked if one can purchase trees through Friends of the Parks for
Arden Hills or is it just for Ramsey County. Mr. Moore clarified that anyone can purchase a tree
for the City of Arden Hills.
