Minutes of Regular Parks Committee Meeting, April 22
Page 4
• Summer Program Proposal
Committee reviewed proposed summer program. "Northern Shore Masters" is an
adult swimming program. A program for junior high youth, "Court Sports",
should be added to the list. This program will be held at King's Court.
Youngsters who enroll can choose to play racquetball or wally ball, and use
other facilities at King's Court. A similar program offered during winter
break was well-attended. In answer to question, Buckley stated that the Arden
Hills Club was not interested in providing a program such as this.
It was moved by Otto, seconded by Montgomery, that the summer program, as
amended, be recommended to Council for approval. Motion carried unanimously.
Council Report
Mayor Woodburn reported on Council actions of interest to this committee. He
stated that negotiations for park dedication with Opus are continuing; they
have submitted an offer totalling 7% of land value.
Garden Contest
Committee concurred to sponsor a beautiful garden contest again this year.
Shirley will arrange publicity now, with judging done by Parks Committee
members in August. Messerly will chair a judging committee.
Elementary Track Program
Buckley explained that, due to budget cuts, District #621 had been forced to
cancel its elementary track program (5th and 6th graders). Since the schools
are not permitted to charge for programs, the recreation departments of the
various cities in the district were asked to ro sponsor the ram in order to
P program
provide financing so it could be continued. Participants could then be
charged a fee that would cover the costs. Arden Hills is sponsoring the
program at Valentine Hills school and island Lake, at a charge of $25.00 per
participant. Buckley reported very good response to the program, adding that
there is no cost to Arden Hills in sponsoring this exceptionally worthwhile
program.
Proposal for Sampson Park Play Equipment
Buckley has received one bid for play equipment in this park (provided for in
1986 budget). He will be getting two or three more bids before making a
decision; invited any committee members who wish to do so to review the
equipment proposals with him. He expects to make a decision within two to
three weeks.
Motion was made by Sand, seconded by Messerly, that Committee accept the
selection of play equipment by Mr. Buckley. Motion carried unanimously.
Tennis and Hockey Lights, Mounds View High School
Buckley stated that the Mounds View Parks Department has a joint powers
agreement with the school district, whereby the district pays the cost of the
electricity for the lighte_ tennis courts at Edgewood. He would like to enter
into the same type of agreement with the district so the lights could be
ctivated at Mounds View High School (operated by push buttons), with the
_,, iistrict paying the electric bill, and possibly providing some of the upkeep.
*' u
U" He also recommends lighting of the hockey rink at Mounds View this winter,
transferring the broomball games to this rink, since lighting there at late
