. Arden Hills Council 11 April 27, 1992
College has its own shuttle service which serves its
students, but that Northwestern College has indicated a
large need ror transit service. Malone supported Option 2.
Councilmember Mahowald agreed that Option 2 appears to sel:ve
more or the community and asked whether there would be
designated bus stops. Rosvold stated that users will "flag"
the bus at major intersections, and ideally, the route would
eventually be appropriately signed. Rosvold added that
Route 102 will also provide additional service to some or
Arden Hills, that connections between Route 101 and 102 are
planned at the Target Greatland location and Rosedale mall.
Rosvold said the RTB is also working on adding park and ride
lots and U or M routes.
Councilmember Hicks asked how f requentl y Route 101 would be
serviced and what factors might caus e the route to be
changed. Rosvold said that it is expected that Route 101
would be serviced once per hour on weekdays and Saturdays,
that 75-125 riders per day is a minimum ridership level, and
current policy is to allow any new route an IS-month trial
before considering route changes.
. MOTION: Malone moved, seconded by Mahowald, to support the
RTB's Route Transit Service incorporating Option 2 ror
Route 10l. Motion carried unanimously (4-0) ,
Residents from two homes located along County Road E
expressed opposition to routing the transit service along
County Road E, concerned that there 1S already a very heavy
level or traffic on County Road E, and buses would create
more noise, air pollution and sarety hazards. They
commented that they are committed to improving their homes
but addition of the bus route would lower the quality of
life for residents along County Road E. They also commented
that serviee to Arden Plaza is not necessary since the
shopping center is dying now due to the loss of the grocery
store at the Plaza.
Councilmember Malone reminded that the buses are 30' long as
opposed to the size of large city buses and theoretically
the buses should decrease the auto traffic on the street.
Councilmember Mahowald also advised that the RTB has the
power to proceed without the City's support, but the Council
has tried to provide reasonable input to maximize the
benefit to the community as a \-Ihole. He commented that it
. is likely that bus routes along major thoroughfares maximize
ridership.
