I D ,7\ f1
o..~ .H.
"i,.......
I. Arden Hilh ~lanninl!: ~inutes Pa!!e 5 03/01/95
I Mr. Summerfeld indicated a change in the way individuals were thinking. He believed
notification was sent properly, but perhaps was inadequate for the present day. He noted there
I are additional concerns of citizens in 1995. He indicated the interest to this meeting by the
community, shows the concerns of the community to its open spaces.
I Mr. Paul Hoelscher 1750 Gramsie Road, indicated he is thirteen years old. He encouraged the
Commission to save the open space, where he and his friends enjoy the outdoors and wildlife.
I Mr. Jay Schrankler 1748 Venus Avenue, indicated concern that the one level homes look like
two level homes. He believed this would change the character of the neighborhood. He indicated
I the view from Valentine Lake will not be appealing.
Mr. Schrankler noted there are multi family housing south of 694 and east of 35W.
I Mr. Marty Roller 1700 Glenview Avenue, indicated concern that the intersection of. the
proposed development and County Road E-2, was too close to old Highway 10. He believed
I further review should be done regarding traffic with Mounds View High School, Valentine Hills
Elementary and Bethel College.
1- Dr. Bob Mullin 1793 Gramsie Road, indicated he is a retired University of Minnesota professor,
and currently is a scout master. He referred to a presentation he had developed regarding
I wilderness. He stated two quotations from the presentation, this quote is from David Brower,
1962 "There is no art and no science of greater importance, than that which teaches seeing; which
builds a sensitivity and respect for the natural world, a world thus cherished will always bring
I mornings when men are new born."
Dr. Mullin then quoted a Wisconsin conservationist: "We abuse land, because we regard it as a
I commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may
begin to use it with love and respect."
I Mr. Paul Mingen 1774 Chadem Avenue, indicated his home is adjacent to open space and
cherishes the space. He noted an article from the Shoreview Bulletin, February 8, 1995. He
quoted comments from this article, "...past park land acquisition has produced a regional system
I that contains a certain amount of geographical imbalance that favors the west and southwest
portions of the metropolitan area according to the Metropolitan Council. Ramsey County's
Recreational Open Space, at 5900 acres is barely larger than the 4800 acre Elm Creek Park
I Reserve in Hennepin County alone. Clearly more open space is needed in the north central, but
very little land exists."
I Mr. Mingen indicated we have very little open space and he encouraged the Commission to keep
I~ this area open space.
I
