The elements included in this category include landscaping, lighting, treatment of overhead utilities, special features, entry/gateway treatments, and city monuments/signs. ] I The roadway enhancement program will consist of overall corridor improvements, which will - I be implemented as part of the roadway reconstruction, and city improvements, which will be ] implemented by each municipality _ In addition, the roadway reconstruction as well as the urban design enhancement program may be implemented in stages over a number of years. - ]I I - APPROACH TO CORRIDOR ENHANCEMENTS ~ I Highway 96 is a highly significant roadway for the seven communities in the corridor. Highway - 96 is an inter -city link, it is a circulation artery for each of the communities, it serves as a gateway ]I I from the regional transportation system, and it connects the communities to a number of significant natural features and open space elements. -- - I. The proposed reconstruction of Highway 96 presents a number of opportunities to enhance the ]I environmentin the corridor: ." . " - . :J I . It allows the improvement or correction of existing conditions; - - . It permits the establishment of an improvement program for new developments; and :l I . It creates the opportunity to incorporate a number of urban design enhancements as part .1 of the roadway improvement project. i I - - Besides standard roadway reconstruction, the communities along the Highway. 96 corridor are I given the opportunity to take a comprehensive look at the corridor and to develop a program ~ which not only provides for practical and functional movement of vehicles and goods along the - corridor, but one which also responds to aesthetic and environmental needs of its citizens. A I major infrastructure improvement project, such as the recqnstruction of Highway 96, should be ""- utilized to not only provide for traffic circulation requirements, but to also add something to the communities and to improve the overall visual and physical environment. I "'-- Natural Environment "".. I One of the primary enhancement oppg.rrinl'ifies of this project is the potential to replenish and --- restore the natural features in the corridor. Besides the mitigation of environmental impacts, such - I- 0 as the replacement of impacted wetlands, the project could be utilized to supplement the existing - landscaping in the corridor and to replace much of the lost vegetation and trees.
