1
I. landscaping and, especially, large evergreen and deciduous trees help to provide shade and cool
the environment, store water, and replenish our environmental systems.
I The corridor improvements should include substantial landscaping improvements and planting of
I boulevard and median trees. To reduce capital costs and to optimize the survival rate of the street
trees, smaller caliper trees should be used. Consideration should be given to installing natura]
groupings oftrees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses to minimize maintenance costs and to provide
I a more natural look to the corridor.
Recreational Uses
I A second area of opportunity, is the potential to enhance passive and active recreational uses. The
corridor is a primary link between and within the communities along the corridor and it contains
I many public facilities, lakes, and natural features.
A primary recreational feature could be a pedestrian/bicycle trail which would extend the whole
I length of the corridor. The trail should be continuous, convenient, safe, and it should provide
linkages to the residential neighborhoods, commercial developments, public facilities, and natural
I features along the corridor.
Other recreational opportunities are presented in association with the natural features and public
I- facilities along the corridor. The Ramsey County Open
Space at Snail Lake, the Water Works Park and Forest Preserve at Sucker Lake, and the
Shoreview Commons area are examples of excellent opportunities to develop recreational features
I and destinations. Linkages to the trail system and rest stops along the lakeshores could provide
an exciting and vibrant recreational environment for actiye as well as passive enjoyment of the
corridor environment.
I Aesthetic Quality
I The third major area of opportunity is to improve the visual environment for aesthetic enjoyment.
Special landscaping treatments including ornamental trees and flowers, well-designed signs and
gateways or entry monuments, and carefully protected views and vistas would serve to increase
I the aesthetic appeal and the enjoyment of the corridor by visitors to the area as well as regular
users.
I The urban design enhancement program should be designed to complement and to improve the
appearance and image of the communities along the Highway 96 corridor. To achieve this will
I require the participation of the communities along the corridor as well as a comprehensive
roadway enhancement program. .
I COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENTS
Ie -
The visual appearance of the seven communities along Highway 96 will be a major factor in the
60
I
,
------
