ANALYSIS NATURAL SYSTEMS)
Round Lake itself i-s a shallow lake about 100 acres in area . About
80V of the lake area is less than 6 feet deep so that aquatic
vegetation is dense and fish winterkill prevalent. The north, east,
and south shorelines are marsh while the slopes on the west shore-
line are wooded.
The west side proposed acquisition contains tree masses and steep
slopes which are important to maintain the scenic qualities of Round
Lake.
The southeast part is rolling, sparsely wooded pasture with pothole
marsh areas some of which adjoin the lake.
CONCEPT
Tne u.S.F.W.S. owns Round Lake and has designated the lake as a
waterfowl production area" . They have expressed a desire to formulate
a joint management plan for United States and Ramsey County property
to fulfill our joint interests in conservation and recreation.
This joint management means that certain areas on both United States
and Ramsey County property are strictly of a preservation nature with
only seasonal lake access and trail use to prevent nesting dis-
turbance. Other areas on both properties will support year-round
passive recreation.
This proposed acquisition at Round Lake is suitable as a County Reserve
or Special Use (such as day camp) area.
1111
