l%
2. REASONS GIVEN BY LJVFD OFFICIALS FOR BUILDING THE PARKING LOT, .
CONTINUED
In addition, the fire chief advised the City of Arden Hills that the parking lot was built
primarily for overflow parking.
Suggestions:
. In addition to making overflow parking arrangements with the Church, which has
a large blacktopped parking lot, there is also LJVFD's Shoreview Fire Station, located
about two miles from Arden Hills and about six miles from the Arden Hills station.
It has a large parking area, is across the street from a school parking lot, and is in a
nonresidential area. Perhaps LJVFD should consider holding large group or
combined training and demonstration events at that location.
Other:
. The lower area where the new parking lot was built is dark and isolated from the
street. The fire chief has advised the city that "no lighting of any kind is being
requested at this time." It is suggested that, should the Planning Commission decide -.
to recommend approval, the lighting issues should be addressed prior to a
decision or recommendation to City Council. The lack of lighting on a parking lot of ~
that size could represent a safety hazard. At the same time, the installation of lighting
could represent an additional series of permit and variance issues.
(see attachment #4)
In summary, it is suggested that the building of the parking lot was based on convenience and
that other ways to solve the occasional overflow parking needs are available and free, For this
reason alone, it is recommended that the request for special use and variances be denied, that
the parking lot be removed, and that the land be returned to its pre-parking lot condition,
.
--
Arden Hills Planning Commission Meeting, September 4, 1996, page] 0
