Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee – September 16, 2025 Page 2

Committee Member Johnson would like to propose the other event will continue to happen.
She described it is a walk around the lake with a luminary experience. The residents along the
lake make luminaries and a walking trail is on the lake. It’s not an official City event but it is
very fun. She wants to make sure residents know that event will continue, despite the ice swim
not returning. Any resident can participate, they don’t have to live on the lake.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said this is the first she heard of it, but clarified it
takes place in Arden Hills and anyone can be a part of it?

Committee Member Olson confirmed. She said the idea of it becoming a City event, has been
discussed.

Chair Dietz asked what the date is.

Committee Member Johnson said there isn’t one yet. It correlated with the Ice Swim last year.
It doesn’t need to be connected to another event.

Committee Member Rogers said when the organizers of the Ice Swim brought the concept to
PTRC it was sold as an annual event that would build every year. It made sense to pair the
luminary walk with that event.

Committee Member Johnson said it will happen again, regardless of if it’s a City event or not.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky asked if the residents who live on the lake provide
and set up the luminaries. Then any residents are welcome to come out for the event?

Committee members confirmed.

Committee Member Jacobson said there is a Lake Johanna Improvement Society. They were
the initial organizers. Some of the neighbors have joined in.

Committee Member Johnson said Northwestern has been a great contributor.

Committee Member Jacobson said last year it was done in conjunction with the Ice Swim,
however prior to that, it was typically held around Valentine’s Day. It would be a terrific City-
sponsored event. So much goes into the event. It is so unique.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said we can advertise the event on the website and
newsletter.

Committee Member Olson said it would be cool if the City can get more involved in this event
so it is not just a grass roots effort.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said she can look into what the City can offer. She
thinks it sounds like a very cool event.

Discussion ensued regarding a few changes that will be made to the 75th Anniversary logo and
the dates will be July 14 and 15.
