Walsh, Parks and Recreation Director . .:; <br /> ~ <br /> SUBJECT: April Department Report <br /> I Parks and Recreation Commission <br /> I Hazelnut Playstructure <br /> The commission met with residents in January and March from the Hazelnut Park area to get <br /> their feedback on playground structure proposals. The consensus from the residents was to <br /> I choose the structure designed by Earl F. Anderson, Inc. (EF A). The proposal includes separating <br /> the younger and older age structures within the same border. The swings will be placed in a <br /> separate area. The play structure has been ordered and will be installed in June. <br /> I Trail Access Points <br /> The residents in the Hazelnut Park area were also invited to give their opinions regarding the <br /> .. future upgrade (8 foot wide bituminous) of trail access areas at Jerrold Avenue, Edgewater <br /> Avenue, and Katie Lane. All of the residents present at the meeting were in favor of upgrading <br /> the access easements as soon as possible. I did receive feedback from one resident at Jerrold <br /> I A venue and one resident on Edgewater A venue who preferred to leave the easement areas in <br /> their current grass state. <br /> I The commission and I agreed to recommend to the City Council that all three easement areas be <br /> upgraded to 8 foot wide bituminous trails. The 1998 Park Fund proposed budget will reflect this <br /> I recommendation. <br /> Park Fund Update <br /> I The Park Fund currently has a balance of$435,740. This does not include the $45,000 <br /> reimbursement from the DNR for the trail project. <br /> I Recreation Pro~rams <br /> The 4th and 5th grade track program begins next week. There are approximately 210 students <br /> registered at Island Lake and Valentine Hills Elementary schools. The summer brochure has <br /> I been sent out to the residents. New summer programs include; parent/child mini sports, action <br /> adventure camp, and a sports sampler class. <br /> I Possible Storm Water Mana~ement Proiect at Floral Park <br /> There is an area north of Floral Park where the trail is continually under water each Spring and <br /> ,. after heavy rains. The water drains from the Indian Oaks Trail neighborhood to the trail and <br /> I <br />
