I
I CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
i' MEMORANDUM
DATE: August 20, 1997
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator ~.
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent
SUBJECT: Monthly Department Head Report
I Public Safety Commission
I The City's Public Safety Commission did not meet this month.
Public Works Department
I Mike McKinney will be the lead man in charge of Industrial/Commercial water meter
replacement. Mr. McKinney, Mr. Post and myself met with Dave Scheerer from Hydro-
Supply (water meter supplier) and put together a plan for the meter replacement. Mr.
I McKinney has visited over fifty (50) businesses already to assess needs for each meter
replacement. Approximately forty (40) meters have been ordered so far, and we hope to do
this each month. Mr. Post has recruited Jane Lund of the Finance Department, to assist the
Ie Public Works Department in scheduling, calling customers, correspondence, etc.
Two fittings burst or cracked in a lift station this month. The problem was noticed on a
I routine inspection. On these daily inspections, pump run time is checked. A flag went up
when it was noted that one pump had run continuously. It had been recirculating the sewage
within the station, as the discharge line was broken. City workers spent about two days
I cleaning and replacing these fittings.
I Approximately 1/10 of the City streets were swept again this month due to all the rain washing
soil into the streets. Also, the City swept up the excess material from seal coating.
I Several more catch basins were rebuilt. Many of the City's catch basins are in bad shape, and
we will be rebuilding them as time permits.
I All of the hydrants on the reconstructed streets were checked for operating condition, adjusted
to proper height where necessary, and painted. This, along with sign straightening and
replacement if necessary, will be a routine part of any reconstruction or improvement project
I in the future.
All of the millings from this year's street project were hauled and spread on he access road to
I No.2 Lift Station. This road is approximately 1/4 mile long, and floods in some areas. The
millings have turned it into a nice stable road.
i'
I
