26
x Necessary and sufficient erosion control to ensure even distribution and prevent wash-out of seed. f.)
x Category 3N-straw (as defined by Minnesota Department of Transportation) natural net erosion control blanket should be installed on
slopes greater than 3:1 rise to run.
Cover crop
x Bare soil areas or areas where erosion control measures have been taken will receive a cover-crop of cultivated oats or winter wheat.
x Contractor is responsible for purchasing, delivering, and seeding the cover-crop.
Planting trees and shrubs
x Separate species to be sweated in bundles of 5-10, depending on size. Bundles should not contain more than one species.
x Bare root plants should be stored in dry conditions between 45-70 degrees F or outside on bare ground if temperatures are suitable.
x Avoid exposing bundles to the sun to prevent damage.
x Syringe the roots thoroughly (spray with a hose or dip into tank) and then cover them with materials that will hold moisture, such as
wet straw, wet burlap, wet excelsior. Do not cover the stems and branches with these materials.
x Cover roots, stems and branches with clear or opaque plastic and anchor down the edges to keep the interior warm and humid.
x Take precautions against drying out roots and otherwise retain the integrity of bare root trees.
x Planting should occur once bud swell begins.
Establishment maintenance
x Mowing:
x Mow all seeded areas 2-3 times in the first-year post seeding.
x At least one mowing in the following year.
x Mowing occurrences will be triggered by notification from the Project Manager.
x Mowing will occur when weeds are 12-18 inches tall, and before the seed is viable.
x Mow to a height of 4-6 inches.
x Significantly disturbed soil and damage to restored areas are to be repaired by the Contractor.
Herbaceous
invasive control
Cool Season Grasses: April-June (Spring) or September –October (early fall) with (choose herbicide: clethodim, sethoxydim, or glyphosate)
Warm Season Grasses: June – September with (choose herbicide: clethodim, sethoxydim, or glyphosate)
x Herbicide Application:
o 90% removal of the targeted specieswill occur by mechanical or chemical methods.
o Additional herbaceous invasives spotted by the provider should be brought to the project manager’s attention.
o This project is not concerned with the following invasive herbaceous species and are beyond its scope:
o Clopyralid formulations (e.g. Transline) are preferred for application to forbs to limit herbicide residence time in soil.
o Treatment should be conducted in summer to early fall.
o Spray operators should take care to spray all leaf surfaces of targeted species and avoid spraying on the top layer of leaves.
o No foliar herbicide applications (regardless of formulation) shall be performed when the daily temperature is predicted to be
>85 degrees F with a corresponding relative humidity of <45% at any time during the day (not just at the time of application).
