.
Potential Roadway Fnhancements
Bituminous Trail
A 2.4 meter (8 ft) wide bituminous trail is could be constructed along the eastern boulevard of
any of the four roadway options. It is anticipated that the trail would run parallel to the roadway
and be located approximately 2.4 meters east of the curb to provide a safety separation and allow
for landscaping and snow storage. The trail would continue through the phase I portion of West
Round Lake Road to the Highway 96 Regional Trail. The trail could ultimately be connected to
the planned trail corridor along the Minnesota Commercial railroad right of way.
[ andscaping
A preliminary landscaping scope for the project includes boulevard trees at approximately 30
foot intervals on average with an allowance for an additional 50 trees to be placed in masses at
intersections, median areas or other locations as desired. The landscaping scope also includes
500 shrubs and irrigation system for high treatment areas. If the Council elects to incorporate
landscaping into the project a more detailed scope will be developed and presented for approval.
The estimate included in this report represents a reasonable baseline of improvements which
would provide a enhanced environment for the users of the roadway and/or trails. State Aid funds
can be used for landscaping costs which do not exceed 5% of the roadway construction cost of
the proj ect.
. Street lighting
A preliminary street lighting scope for the project includes lights along both boulevards of the
roadway at 300 foot intervals on each side with lights staggered. Additional standards are
included at the Gateway Court and Gateway Boulevard intersections. Budget costs included for
light standards assume corten steel type design with shoebox fixtures set at a height of
approximately 30 feet. The optimum streetlight height and spacing will vary depending on the
roadway alternative chosen. If the council elects to incorporate street lighting into the project a
detailed illumination analysis will be performed to determine the optimum light spacing and
height.
\Vatermain Improvements
Proposed watermain improvements include the constmction of a 12 inch diameter watermain
along the entire proposed roadway alignment. The watermain would begin with a connection
to the existing 12 inch watermain at Gateway Court and connect to the proposed 12 inch
watermain to be constructed as a part of the phase 1 improvements. The project would
include minor modifications to existing watermain service stubs for the commercial
properties. The existing 8 inch diameter watermain which mns along existing West Round
Lake Road would be abandoned in place or removed as necessary. New hydrants would be
provided along the entire roadway.
The replacement of 8 inch diameter watennain with 12 inch diameter watcrmain along West
. Round Lake Road was originally recommended in the City Water System Master Plan
prepared in 1990. The upgrade should provide for enhanced pressLlfes and fire flow capacity
4
