CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
. MEMORANDUM
DATE: May 20, 1998
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Cindy S. Walsh, Parks and Recreation Director f s/,-/
SUBJECT: Department Report
Parks and Recreation Commission
The Commission has been Plioritizing the trail and park improvements. I have been working
with them and MFRA to incorporate the Comprehensive Plan into this prioritization process. At
their May meeting. the Commission further prioritized the projects for 1999 and 2000. They
have some concerns about recommending projects for 2001-2003 because there are several
unknown factors that may influence projects. The unknowns mainly relate to Ramsey County's
Pavement Management Plan. It would be more economical to constmct the proposed trail
projects along New Brighton Road and Old Highway 10 at the time the County reconstructs
those streets. While the Commission members feel that those trail segments are important, it is
difficult to predict when the County may improve the roads.
. Earth Day
Volunteers from the girl and boy scouts helped with the clean up of (rash at City parks and along
trail areas on April 25 and May 2. The Park Maintenance staff and I appreciate their efforts.
Flower Planting
The annual planting of the community flower beds occurred on Saturday, May 16. The Holiday
Inn provided a free breakfast to planters and provided a place for me to meet with the volunteers
before planting began. There will be name plates provided at the garden sites to recognize the
residents for their volunteer efforts.
Joint Athletic Facilities
The area Parks and Recreation Directors and School District officials continue to meet. Weare
attempting to identify whether redeveloping school district facilities will satisfy some or all of
the field deficiencies that have been identified. The Mayors, Managers, and Directors meet again
as a group on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30 a.m. The City of Arden Hills will host that meeting.
I am anticipating that once the plans have been discussed, the next step in the process is to
consider various funding options.
Comprehensive Plan
I will be meeting with Northwestern College again to further explore (rail connection
. opportunities with them. I have also asked the City of Rose vi lie to participate in the meeting
since this area could serve as a trail connection for them as well.
-.
