~-.
. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: September 23, 1998
TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Arden Hills Public Works Director V)'
SUBJECT: Monthly Department Head Report
Public Safety Commission
The City of Arden Hills Monthly Public Safety Commission Meeting was held on September
17th at City Hall.
The main topic was the Emergency Preparedness Plan. The Commission received the first cut of
the plan from Mr. Bishop and reviewed it page by page. Suggestions for further changes have
been made and some questions for Council will be asked at the next Council Worksession.
e A Fairview Avenue resident wrote the Public Works Director asking that signs be installed
restricting turns on to Crystal A venue during morning school rush hour traffic. These signs
would be similar to those on Valentine A venue. Students are turning off of Lake Valentine Road
and racing down Crystal to Fairview Avenue, then back to Lake Valentine Road to avoid
backups at the Fairview Avenue stop sign on Lake Valentine Road.
The Commission asked that the Public Works Director contact the Sheriffs Department and ask
for increased rush hour patrolling of the Crystal/Fairview area. A letter on this issue has been
sent to the Sheriffs Office.
1998 Street Project
Little work has been done on Edgewater and Stowe Avenues this past month. These two streets
need only the final coarse of blacktop and minor punch list items corrected for completion.
Fairview Avenue finally got its cllrb and gutter and the first coarse of pavement installed.
Boulevard grading is underway. The notice to the contractor on possible liquidated damages
seemed to gct their attcntion. Hopefully the Ward driveway issue on Fairview may be resolved.
Sandeen Avenue presents some new problems. Prior to construction activities, the Public Works
Director and City Engineer felt patching and overlay was suitable for this roadway.
Following heavy construction traffic from new gas main installation, milling the pavement
. edges, some storm sewer modifications, and a small amount of curb installation, the street was
broke up beyond saving with just an overlay.
