e

.

.

ARDEN HILLS PLAl\'NING COMMISSION - NOVEMBER 7,2001

7

Commissioner Erickson asked about the lighting. Mr. Reiter stated it was to be backlit.

Acting Chair Sand expressed concern about setting precedence if this was approved. He
stated he did not see there being any hardship.

Commissioner Zimmerman asked why they wanted a 30-foot tall sign, instead of a 16-
foot tall sign. Mr. Olson replied that the architect that designed the sign had apparently
not checked the ordinances, hut he did not believe the sign would look odd at 30 feet. He
apologized for not checking the ordinance, but they were still asking for the variance at
this time.

Commissioner Erickson expressed concern about the sign heing so close to the property
line and while he liked the design of the sign, he believed there were some issues that
needed to be addressed. He suggested they super-impose the sign on their property to
show how it would actually look on the property.

Acting Chair Sand closed the puhlic hearing at 9:39 p.m.

Mr. Pakulski expressed concern about the height of the sign. He stated he believed this
sign should be scaled down to the Ordinances established.

Commissioner Galatowitsch stated the new sign was a hundred percent improvement to
the cnrrent sign, but she would like to see it super-imposed on the site to gain some
perspective.

Commissioner Zimmerman moved, seconded by Commissioner Erickson, to table
Planning Case #01-28, Catholic Aid Association, 3499 Lexington Avenue, Sign Variance
to allow applicant an opportunity to bring the sign into compliance with the City Code
and allow applicant to waive the 60-day application period.

Applicant stated they would be willing to waive the 60-day application period.

The motion carried (4-1). (Commissioner Pakulski - Nay).

UNFINISHED AND NEW BUSINESS

CASE # 01-29 - LITTLE BROTHERS/FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY, CONCEPT SITE
PLAN AND SPECIAL USE PERMIT MODIFICATION

Staff reviewed their report dated November 1,2001 and asked for comments relative to
the proposed concept plan.

Commissioner Erickson stated it appeared this proposal was not out of scale with the site.
He asked how visihle would tile structure be from Hamline Avenue. Mr. Bill Russ,
Architect, stated it was very minimal, there were a lot of trees and with the topography,
the building would be very difficult to see.

"~."".,.""-"...~!!><,. -""'1"'\Y01
" ","',,"' .~'""~""

: ,\ ."" ,
