The Safety Trench Box, used in the repair of water and sanitary
sewer lines, is installed into a trench to protect 0 & M employees from cave-ins. A report was
immediately filed with Ramsey County Sheriff and the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance
Trust (LMCIT). The LMCIT has informed staff that this particular item was not listed as an
insured item under the City's Policy, thus no reimbursement for the loss will occur.

Budl!et
The Safety Trench Box was scheduled for replacement in the 2004 CIP. Staff secured three
bids for the replacement of the stolen Safety Trench Box. The low bidder was United Rentals
located in the City of Roseville. The total cost, including sales tax and freight, is $9,270.
Funding for the purchase would be provided equally from the Water and Sanitary Sewer
Enterprise Funds. As of August 31,2003, the balance for the Water Fund was $1,437,189.86
and the Sanitary Sewer Fund was $1,167,184.41.

Recommendations
Staff recommends the purchase of a Hydra Shield Safety Trench Box from United Rentals at a
cost not to exceed $9,270. Staff further recommends that the funding of this purchase be split
equally between the Water and Sanitary Sewer Enterprise Funds.
