City of Arden Hills
BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota
Active Community Planning Grant #499

of government; 6) Looking for opportunities to retrofit existing buildings and routes to allow for

.

more physical activity options; 7) Addressing land use regulations that inadvertently prohibit

active community envirorunents; and 8) Taking advantage of existing rcsourccs, such as sample

policies, programs, and casc studies.

The City of Ardcn Hills embraces these recommendations, and although we realize these

changes will not happen overnight, we are working to incorporate them into our planning,

policy- making, and built environments as much as practical.

For over fifty years, thc City of Arden Hills has had an active Parks, Trails, and Recreation

Committce ("PTRC") involved in planning and promoting recreational and active living

opportunities within the City. The long standing PTRC has served the citizens of Arden Hills by .

working to ensure a comprchensive and well-maintained system of parks, trails, open spaces, and

a balanced program of affordable recreation activities. In ordcr to promotc and expand thc

recreational and trail facilities, the PTRC developed the Parks, Trails, and Open Space Plan in

2002. The PTRC Plan idcntified areas for improvcmcnt and prcpared a preliminary

implementation plan.

Whilc the PTRC continues to be a strong proponent of active community living in thc City, its

mission has expanded from focusing primarily on residential areas to include more functional

aspects of active living throughout the City. In 2006, the PTRC explicitly expanded their Vision

from the 2002 Parks, Trails, and Open Space Plan beyond residential areas of the City:

.

2
