PLATNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
appropriate materials in conjunction with costs, both front end and long
term.
4. How does workplan account for inflation?
Events Services 1 Difficult to meet all needs due to availability pressure from many differ-
ent interests on campus.
2 Pressure from academic needs versus music performances and special
events; is there need to re -assess goals and objectives for potential con-
flicts as they relate to academic mission and ministry/ outreach mis-
sion?
Academic Program Issues
1. A limit on enrollment has been established due to existing facilities
capacity.
2. Current demographics indicate that traditional college age students are
peaking within the next 2 or 3 years. How will this affect the enrollment
increases that NWC has been experiencing over the last 5 to 10 years?
By Department
Art & Graphic Design 1.
Faculty: 3 FT and 4 PT
2.
Have 56 Art majors this year, normally plan for 40-45; have 94 in Art
Appreciation, prefer 48.
3.
Art Department enrollment has increased from 41 students in 1990 to
57 students in 1995, and 130 students in 2000. (a 217% increase over 10
years, and a 1287o increase over the last 5 years) How long will this
last.
3.
Feeling pinch for space in current Totino fine Arts Building areas. (Space
was built in 1982 when college was 700 total students.) Too many
classes in one space
4.
In temporary space, no investment in safety, equipment, air quality. Air
quality a major concern due to art processes. Examples: air quality in
printmaking; concern for open flame with wood structure; bronze pours
in parking lot (seasonal weather and restrictions).
5.
Discussed Nazareth Gym space conversion as permanent solution (cur-
rent temporary home) into two levels of instructional space. Upper
level could make nice art spaces due to large volume and daylight.
Could hold: a) Sculpture / 3-D Design Studio, b) Kiln / Foundry Room,
and c) Drawing/ 2-D Design Studio.
6.
Students complain difficult to set up projects for long enough periods
of time.
7.
Students perceive that the College's view on its instructional facilities is
a reflection of how the College feels about its students.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.5
