PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
timely to plan and more expensive), etc. How to budget?
8. Concern over equipment purchase expense and quality between
Theatre Department versus Maranatha; coordinate equipment pur-
chases.
Communication 1. Population:
130 students
10 FT faculty
3+ adjunct faculty
2. Critical needs:
a. WVOE has no instructional lab for teaching radio lab; space
used is substandard and undersized; consideration for re -use of
current Radio Station space since technology, sound -proofing is
in place. (Note: Former KTIS subsequently converted to aca-
demic offices.)
b. Need Lab/ demo classroom with technology.
c. Need lab / resources for Comm Tech/ Web Design; combine with
Journalism, Web, Dig Video, etc.; workshops for Column, Scroll,
web, etc.
Child Development 1.
Space is way too small for function as child care center and instruc-
tional lab space.
2.
State guidelines prescript SF per child, but do not make allowances
for use as Lab setting for Child Development educational program
(student teachers) at same time. Note that the 35 SF requirement is
extremely tight to begin with, let alone adding student teachers and
faculty.
3
Currently, 6 students enrolled in program, with 21 students expected
next year. They need space to prepare activities, meet/converse
with faculty, have faculty observe students in action, store personal
effects, etc.
4.
Requests made by Program include the following: Conference space
(students, staff, parents), small group space (children/ grandfriend),
teacher planning space, Intergenerational Coordinator's Office and
Director's Office.
5.
Current space consists of 1,252 ASF for child care spaces and 297
ASF for offices. State Department of Health requires 35 SF per
child (not including office space, miscellaneous spaces, cabinets,
tables, etc.). The center is licensed for 38 students (12 toddlers and
26 pre-school). (Overload of 42 children requires use of Center's
Parlor for which there is no formal arrangement according to center
staff.) (NOTE: Calculations indicate that current space does not
meet Board of Health rules: 35 SF x 38 students = 1,330 SF. Only
1,252 SF available per NWC space inventory. Need to verify.)
6.
Currently, lack of Office space compromises operation. Main Office
which is designed for 2 people is used by 4-5 people. Also, seven
teachers using equivalent of a "wide window sill" in narrow aisle
storage area as office space.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.7
