PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
where on campus.)
5. Parking after 10 AM a problem for supervising student teachers.
6. Issue of furniture types used; reinforces need to develop standard
of some sort, but with flexibility for educational delivery methods
and teaching styles.
History 1. History, Geography, Political Science, Economics (also includes edu-
cation majors).
2. Faculty 2 FT, 3 PT; add 1 FT next year; 1 work study per faculty
(shares space in faculty office).
3. Standard class: upper division =15-20 (up to 40 max.); senior semi-
nar 15-16.
Languages 1. Faculty 1 FT Director, 1 FT Spanish, and 4 adjunct
2. Department is smallest on campus, but only 5 years old.
3. Desire to co -locate all spaces (N458, N412, N460)
4. Class size limits: 24 lower level, 12 upper level.
5. Furniture is hodge-podge (due to space shortage?); desire fixed fur-
niture (not grouping — "can't teach a duck to quack in a group").
6. Desires dedicated "classroom"; need for maps, cultural artifacts,
etc.
7. Need for popular culture class; "work" language, not "study".
Music (also Maranatha activities)
1. A Classroom for 10-12 students for upper level courses would be
helpful, in that large classrooms would then not unnecessarily tied
up for small size classes. (The need for small classrooms appears
elsewhere on campus.)
2. Inappropriate use of Band/ Choir Rooms for lecture classes. Stu-
dents must use lap boards. Use of specialty Music as classrooms
ties up space for use as lab.
3. It appears that the department is short roughly 5 — 8 practice
rooms.
4. Instrument storage space is marginal.
5. Shortage of rehearsal space necessitates use of Nazareth Chapel for
ensemble rehearsals.
6. Need was expressed for drama stage setup as instructional lab for
theatre students (3-5 weeks); conflicts with Maranatha single per-
formance events. Conflicts would increase if/when Theatre Minor
ever offered.
7. Shortage of office space. (Music, Art, Communication) Note that
Music faculty teaches private lessons in their offices. Need for
roughly 6 —10 additional offices based on current loads. Currently,
one Music Faculty using Wenger practice module as office. (Note:
Office space here, as well as everywhere else on campus, must
be reviewed as total campus need due to high Office ASF to FTE
ratio.)
8. No Conference Room or Lounge. (Faculty meetings in Classrooms.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.9
