PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES E III
Wedding planning client meetings in corridors)
9. Main Music Office appears crowded. Warrants consideration for
expansion and / or remodeling into more efficient layout.
10. Report by Dr. Jack Schwarz (in anticipation of National Associa-
tion Schools of Music visit) raises significant criticism for crowding.
Both space size and quality are listed as major challenges that affect
quality of Music program. Also lists need for higher quality prac-
tice room instruments, which will add to space need. Dr. Harold
Best also expresses similar concerns in his report for the 2002 NASM
visit)
11. Note that Academy of Music adds to total space demand with
instruction provided to 309 pre -college students. (Note: 2:30 — 5:30
PM period)
Psychology 1. Includes Psychology, Social Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology and
Anthropology.
2. Currently 3 faculty, will add 1 now, and 1 later.
3. No major issues.
4. Need Psych Lab with two-way mirror for observation.
5. Considering adding Child Psychology Minor, then Major.
6. Identity an issue; no "home' for psych major.
Science & Mathematics 1. 57 majors
2. Faculty 7 FT; add 2 FT next year; 1 FT lab tech; 5 adjunct faculty.
3. Currently 12 lab section, 5 gen ed sections
4. Biology (75 students) has one small lab 935 SF plus prep room of
155 SF =1,090 SR At 50-60 ASF / Sta norm, this projects to a capacity
of 18 stations, when actually 24 stations (verify qty.) are currently
filled per section; would normally project 1,200 ASF —1,440 ASF for
24 stations.
5. Chemistry (31 students) lab to be remodeled; existing space is 24'-0"
x 37-10" which equals 908 ASF.
Sections will have 24 stations.
Norm is 50-80 ASF / Sta, so 24 stations require 1,200 ASF — 1,920
ASF.
6. Pre -Engineering (12 students)
7. Physics / Geology use 40-60 ASF / Sta
Floor is in poor shape.
8. Short of storage space.
9. Long term proposal for two new programs: Biochemistry and Biol-
ogy Education major (grades 6-12). Would need one more lab.
ALPHA Center 1. New need for adults increasing dramatically.
2. With one large Testing Room, other space issues appear to be
layout/ equipment or re -allocation issues. (Review in more detail
as an architectural programming effort.)
3. Consider potential for small DOSS tutoring room.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.10
