PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
4. Meeting in BRC Study Room is difficult to oversee and transport
materials. Also, takes space out of use for Library.
5. Contact hours =
Writing Tutoring: 732 writing tutorials @ 0.5 hour each = 366 hours
per semester =15 weeks = 25 WSCH average (not peak loads)
Other -Subject Tutoring: 112 tutorials @ 0.5 hour each = 56 hours per
semester T 15 weeks = 4 WSCH
DOSS Referrals: 4 tutorials for first quad (max.)
FOCUS/Pathways 1. Student population:
Spring 99 132 (first year)
Spring 00 350
Fall 01 400
Average class size is 12-15. (The need for small classrooms appears
elsewhere on campus.)
Maximum number of groups is 33 starting at one time. Three need
computer labs; remainder need classroom space. Only 27 true class-
rooms exist on campus. (Does not include 'Personal Enrichment'
classes.) Need for classrooms exceeds capacity.
2. Masters Program to be started. Where will its classes meet if Class-
room space already tight?
3. Short-term solution is to rent space off campus.
4. Need for "adult" furniture; have had complaints.
NOTE: If change is to be made, then "Furniture Standards" should be initiated.
Furniture size and shape can drastically affect classroom/lab station capacity.
Inappropriate furniture selection can drastically reduce room capacity by up to
25-35%. (This applies to the entire campus.)
5. FOCUS / Pathways not aligned with conventional school year start /
end. Scheduling alignment should be reviewed for potential con-
flicts aggravating space need. (Institutional policy issue?)
6. Need for conference space expressed due to much one-on-one dis-
cussions.
7. Impact of central filing versus individual filing should be reviewed
by administrator. (Duplication has a SF impact.)
Personal Enrichment 1. Feel space pinch.
2. Confined to 10 rooms, one night a week.
3. Was running 16 different courses comfortably, but now down to 10.
Would like to run more.
4. Conflict with FOCUS/ Pathways need for evening classroom space.
Meet in Lab space if appropriate and available?
Summer School 1. Mostly quality of space issue.
2. Non -air conditioned classrooms used when others have priorities.
3. Wired classrooms not always available when "outside" groups pay
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.11
