PLANNING ISSUES & .ANALYSES E III
3 Faculty Offices are at a premium: A faculty member offices in
a'Wenger' Practice Module. Faculty retention is more difficult
when faced with this type of space problem.
4 Lecture classes are being held in the Choir and Band Room —
students need to use lap boards to take notes. As a result, quality
of education suffers.
5 Since Art is a visual discipline, condition of the Art Lab in former
Nazareth Gym makes a statement on the quality of the education
delivered to Art students (regardless of faculty dedication, etc.).
Also, it is not consistent with the College's Mission.
6 Campus Life Objectives (quality of campus life issue) add to
square footage demands, often in ways not immediately apparent.
7 Ministry functions support the College's Mission:
a Space use must acknowledge ministry functions in some way.
b Many of the ministry functions add space demand not found
on many campuses
c Extent of music (academic program, ministry, outside events,
private lessons, etc.)
d events (demand for Maranatha Hall use by both academics
and outside events)
e Radio needs (academic and ministry)
f Child Care (academic and ministry)
8 There are many variables in assessing space requirements on
college campuses. Each campus has its own personality. For
all campuses, the following make an impact on space:
Mission
Objectives
Policies
Educational methods, goals
Quantitative Issues
100 Classrooms
At capacity, even after expanding day by one hour over current day,
Classroom space is short by 5,300 Assignable Square Feet.
Currently, classroom lectures are being delivered in inappropriate
spaces and affecting quality of education. Example: lectures are given
in Band and Choir Rooms and require students to take notes on lap
boards.
200 Labs
At capacity, even after expanding day by one hour over current day,
Laboratory space is short by 5,890 Assignable Square Feet.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.19
