Plan should consider pedestrian entrance areas as well as service
and vehicular arrival areas
20 Develop a Site Improvement and Landscaping Plan for the entire
campus in coordination with the development recommendations
of the Campus Master Plan. Special attention should be given
to such areas as:
21
pedestrian walkways
entry areas
interior courts
parking areas
lake orientation
student safety
The college should
make definitive efforts to maintain consistency in building mate-
rials (brick and stone) and their use. The Historical Preservation
Committee should be used to ensure historical and aesthetic
preservation of campus architecture, as the buildings are an
expression of who Northwestern College is. It should be remem-
bered that the College's image (physical and psychological) is a
powerful marketing tool. (Refer to 'Design Guidelines')
22 Until anew student/ community center can be built, develop
Nazareth Hall's east entry so that it gives prospective students a
feeling of welcome and importance.
23 As part of educating the whole student, maximize display of stu-
dent work throughout campus at appropriate locations. Display-
ing artwork on campus in a serious and professional manner will
reflect the College's investment in its current students, and also
serve as a marketing function with prospective students.
24 Establish forum for informal, low key solo and ensemble "con-
certs" (with no electronic needs) at various locations on campus.
25 Look at ways to capitalize on the campus island and chapel.
Appropriate uses could be a nature resource and a spiritual
retreat. Other uses could be a student -gathering place and a tool
to increase funding from outside sources such as weddings and
baptisms. An amphitheater could be developed for plays and
concerts to be viewed from the shore or on boats off shore. With
the quality of the college's music program, these concerts would
be a good public gesture and reinforce the college's standing as
a good neighbor.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 5.6
