RECOMMENDATIONS
Flexibility allows for dealing with unforeseen program develop-
ments at a reduced cost and has the potential of facilitating
scheduling. Owing to flexibility, spaces can also serve other
groups, and therefore, increase the efficient use of facilities.
Moreover, the techniques of presenting course material in class
have been changing. Innovations, whose aims are ranging from
the more thorough conveyance of material to the saving of teach-
ing staff hours, are almost constantly being introduced. Ignoring
these changes would contradict the very essence of good college
building, i.e., to facilitate the teaching functions.
Here, flexibility intends to mean expandability of spaces and
convertibility of spaces. This flexibility may manifest itself in a
grid -like (modular) arrangement of structure, mechanical, electri-
cal and signal supply lines, so that each module may serve func-
tions at a certain, predictable level.
These services can be tapped by the educational program at a
functional and convenient spot. They could be present, hidden
in the floor, or in the ceiling space, etc. If it were too expensive
to build them, the main supply lines may provide a stub, or be
only "roughed in" to be used later. Other practical manifesta-
tions of flexibility are: constructing larger, sub -dividable spaces,
or generic science labs to serve several subjects.
35 Develop a campus "Central Store" (likely location is in new
Student/ Community Center Building) which allows bulk pur-
chasing that is cost effective, and maintains better inventory and
control. Provide 'legitimate' loading dock for semi loading and
step van loading.
36 As a short term solution to space needs, consider "decking"
Riley Hall Gym with a second level, and relocating appropriate
campus functions for greater effectiveness in serving the student
population.
37 As part of educating the whole student, consider incorporating a
"fitness room" in new campus housing.
38 The need to use a space or building for a time as short term
storage or staging area for a larger project must be understood
by the NWC community. A building my not be used at first for
its intended or advertised use. (The proposed Community Life
Building and Alternative Education Program would be exam-
ples.)
39 Relocation of above ground and below grade services should
be assessed for cost and planned for relocation to minimize ease-
ments and maintenance cost.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 5.8
