APPENDIX
1. Enrollment Expectations Handout:
Doug Huffman, Dean of Admissions & Records gave his
report and pointed out the following items.
Property - The campus must be prepared for about 1,700
students to average 1,600 FTE for a school year.
Mission -The facilities affect how we are going to do our
mission and space is needed to make it happen, but we
should not let space completely dictate our mission.
Markets - There are 3 areas to consider when marketing
the college.
Demographics - 58% of NWC's student body come from
MN and 30 % from WI, IA, ND, SD, and IL. It is
important to note that the "echo boom" (children of the
"baby boomers") is to hit its high school graduation peak
in Minnesota in 2003 with 63,165 graduates, more than
any year since the 1980's. The CCCU discovered that the
biggest competitors to Christian institutions for Christian
students are public institutions like the U of M because of
perceived quality and affordability.
Target Audience - The College's pool of potential students
for traditional day school is limited. The enrollment
surge in 2000-2001 and record retention has put us two
years in advance of the projection model to reach the
1,600 FTE goal.
Affordability - NWC is already too expensive for the
families that send their students here according to the
comparison of price to estimated family wealth. Schools
like Bethel charge more, but their families can afford it.
NWC may need to raise awareness and have a different
marketing scheme.
Discussion:
Barb commented that the CCCU 3 top institutions have noted
for retention the cost, size and spiritually. The larger the
size the higher the retention. Larry Page commented that once
Northwestern reaches 1600 FTE we might have to be more
selective in certain areas (students, majors, etc).
2. General Classroom Needs Handout:
Dr. Barb Lindman, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction gave her
report and pointed out the following items.
Based from the space study from Partners & Sirny and NWC
course enrollment data, it is estimated that an additional
a 6„293 square feet of general use classroom space is needed
3 R 5%FTS `%.ccommodate an FTE of 1600. If the less -than -desirable
LASS kee off, classrooms are not used the total needed is 13,818 square
feet.
The new media building could have room for classes, but
because of the distance of the building more time would be
needed to pass to the next class.
See tables 1-5 in handout for specific data.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS APP CA
